Varsity Stallions Score Decisive Win Over Chargers

The Northville Stallions Varsity team scored a decisive victory over the Commerce Chargers on Saturday, September 16 by a score of 28-6.

The first quarter saw the Chargers revive the ball at their own 46. Tackles by Luke Brodde and Raymond Douglas halted the drive early and the Stallions took over after the punt at their own 30. A 15 yard run by Grady Zoroya started the drive, and runs by him and Tyler Ross moved the ball, but the drive stalled and resulted in a punt, Commerce taking over on their own 25. A long run resulted in a Commerce touchdown, and an 8-0 lead after the extra point kick. Northville received the kickoff on their own 49. Runs by Brodde and Zoroya advanced the ball to end the quarter.

The drive continued in the second quarter, with the Stallions deep in Commerce territory. A pass from Reece Jones to Joe Lavigne from the 20 resulted in the Stallions first home touchdown of the year, and a score of 8-8 after the kick by 1. Commerce started after the kickoff on the Northville 47. Tackles by Nate Cotter, Tyler Ross and Andy Garza led to a 4th down turnover and Northville ball on their own 41. On the first play Zoroya took the ball for a long touchdown and a 16-8 lead after the successful Jones kick. Commerce took over on the Northville 41. Tackles by Brodde, Garza and Jones forced a Commerce punt, and Northville took over on their own 20. On the first play from scrimmage, Jones passed to Zoroya over the middle, laying it in his hands in stride. Zoroya burned the secondary, scoring an 80 yard touchdown and a score of 22-8. Commerce received the kickoff on their own 35. Tackles by Luke Brohl, Gregory Staton, Joshua Horning, Ross and Lavigne slowed the Chargers drive, and two attempted passes were broken up by Lavigne. Zoroya tackled the Commerce runner on a fourth down conversion attempt, and Northville took over on their own 30 with :11 left, then ran out the clock with a 22-8 lead.

7 received the kick for Northville on their own 13. Three straight runs by Zoroya moved the ball quickly to the Commerce 35. Runs by Jones, Ross, Lavigne, and Zoroya led to a turnover on downs. Commerce started on their own 27. Northville team tackling led to a punt to the Northville 40. Four straight Zoroya runs, then runs by Ross, advanced the ball through the end of the quarter with the score unchanged from the half.

Brodde ran the ball for Northville to start the fourth, but the drive stalled. The punt by Lavigne led to Commerce starting on their own 25. Brodde quickly intercepted a pass from the Commerce quarterback, and made a short return, setting Northville up on the Commerce 34. Runs by 17 and Zoroya led to a sideline pass from Jones to Brodde. Rushes by Ross and Zoroya advanced the ball, and a fumble recovery by Meadows kept the ball in Northville hands. Zoroya converted the fourth down, setting up an 11 yard pass from Jones to Lavigne and a score of 28-8 Northville. Commerce started on their own 44, and tackles by Merritt, Horning, Brodde, Ross, Garza, and Staton slowed the drive. Commerce broke loose for a long run, with the touchdown only prevented by Meadows running the player down on the sideline. Commerce threatened to score to end the game, but tackles by Ryan Reynolds, Ty Meadows, Zoroya, and Garza led to a loss of downs. Northville then ran out the clock to secure the win.

The Stallions moved to 2-2 on their first home victory of the season.
