Stallions celebrate after a touchdown

The JV Stallions beat the Livonia Orioles 31-6 at Bentley Field on Oct. 12. The Stallions’ defense was tough again, giving up only one first down in the first half and keeping the Orioles out of the end zone until the closing seconds of the game.

The Stallions scored early and often. The Orioles started out on offense, but #25 Austin McGarrow picked off a pass on the very first down of the game. The Stallions quickly converted the turnover into points. On second down, #14 Cooper Derkach threw a great pass to #30 Brody Grezak, who took it in for the score. The extra point was no good, giving the Stallions a 6-0 lead.

The Stallions forced another turnover on the next Orioles’ drive. On first down, #12 Dylan Young had a sack, pushing the Orioles back. On second down, the quarterback was stripped and #1 Zane Ader recovered the fumble.

The Stallions once again converted the turnover into points. On first down at the Orioles’ 31-yard line, #24 Tyler Shelide took a handoff all the way for the Stallions’ second touchdown, just four minutes into the game. Another missed extra point gave the Stallions a 12-0 lead.

On the next Orioles’ drive, it was Toomey Time, with three tackles by #32 Nolan Toomey, including a sack on fourth down, resulting in a turnover on downs.

The Stallions’ defense stayed tough, with #24 Shelide intercepting a pass on second down on the next Orioles’ drive as the first quarter wound down. The Stallions converted the pick into their third touchdown. #25 McGarrow had a great catch and run for a first down, followed by a pass from #23 Aiden Kersey to #5 Ryan Jaafar for another first down.

After taking a sack, the Stallions were third and 24. #14 Derkach got back some of those yards on a pass to #41 Nathan Brohl, followed by another touchdown pass to #30 Grezak on fourth and thirteen. #4 Justin Minard caught the extra point pass from #14 Derkach and the Stallions took a 19-0 lead going into halftime.

The Stallions got the ball to start the second half and #5 Jaafar caught the kickoff and almost scored, finally getting stopped at the five-yard line. On first and goal, #5 Jaafar seized the opportunity to get the points he almost had on the opening play. The extra point was no good, leaving the Stallions with a 25-0 lead just over a minute into the third quarter.

After the Stallions’ defense forced a turnover on downs, the offense got back to work. On fourth and thirteen, #23 Kersey completed a long pass to #10 Jurek Nowakowski, giving the Stallions first and goal. After an incomplete pass, #23 Kersey hit #87 Finn Priebe for a touchdown. The extra point was no good, giving the Stallions their final point total of 31.

The Orioles’ only score came at the very end of the fourth quarter. #44 Chase Gilbertson stopped the extra point, leading to the final score of 31-6.

Orange Crush came in for a play on offense in the fourth quarter, with #19 Collin Kenneally getting a carry. In their own first-half development game, the Orange Crush defense was all over the field but didn’t get the ball back before time ran out. #6 Andrew Shukeireh, #11 Koen Raitz, #19 Collin Kenneally, #20 Nick Lundberg, and #79 Edward Cho had tackles, and there were two team tackles.

In the second half development game, #3 Drew Bandilla and #11 Koen Raitz both had short gains. #20 Lundberg earned a first down on second and twelve but was tackled at the line of scrimmage as time ran out on his next carry.

The Stallions play their last regular-season game against the Livonia Falcons on Oct. 20 and look to remain in second place with a win.
